Dehydration: Recognition and Treatment

Dehydration was another subject that was discussed at the Preparedness class I attended a couple nights ago. The teacher shared information on how to make your own Re-hydration Kit. I found the following detailed information regarding dehydration on www.storagerocks.blogspot.com. (The recipe is identical to the one we were given.)
"Dehydration results from excessive loss of body fluids. dehydration may follow episodes of diarrhea, vomiting, prolonged fever, and any condition where there is a rapid and extreme loss of body fluid. Some signs of diarrhea include: frequent bowel movements that the person cannot control, watery stools, little urine or dark yellow urine, more than normal thirst, dry mouth and tongue, sunken fontanelle, sunken or dry eyes, fast, weak pulse, flushed/dry skin, skin that does not spring back immediately when pinched, lethargy, irritability or confusion. If someone has two or more of the signs of dehydration, it is important to restore fluids as soon as possible. a simple oral re-hydration solution can be made by mixing the following ingredients:

RE-HYDRATION FORMULA
1/4 teaspoon real salt
1/4 teaspoon no salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
2 1/2 teaspoons sugar
Mix into 4 cups water

Give the person small sips of the solution every five minutes, even if he vomits, until he begins to urinate normally. The drink can be given with fruit juices as a flavoring. The person may also drink green coconut water, thin vegetable soup/broth, or the water in which rice or barley has been cooked.

FOR KIT:
9 oz. real salt
11 oz. no salt
1 box baking soda
4 1/2 cups sugar
in one-gallon bag

NOTE: The "No Salt" and "Real Salt" are not available at all grocery stores. I did find both at Smith's Food & Drug. Macey's had "Real Salt" but not the "No Salt".

  1. Where do you find "No Salt". I can't seem to find it. Is it by the salt?
Thanks so much for the great info!

  2. Thanks Heidi! Yes, I found the "No Salt" by the salt in the spice section. Not every grocery store carries it. "Smith's Food & Drug" had some when I was looking for it.

  3. Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic for flu. Can be purchased in grocery stores. Adults & children can take it. It was recommended by a pediatrition. Works great!
Also, Red raspberry tea will relieve flu. Adults drink 2 quarts a day.
